How to pack your stuff

Moving into a new home is an exciting experience, but packing can quickly become one of the most stressful parts of the process. Whether you're moving into a new rental property, relocating across Maryland, or preparing for a fresh start in Washington, DC, a good packing strategy can save you time, money, and frustration.
At Zima Management, we understand that a successful move begins with proper planning. Here are nine practical packing tips to keep you organized and help protect your belongings.
1. Start with a packing plan
Walk through your home and identify which items you use regularly and which can be packed ahead of time. Start with seasonal decorations, extra linens, books, and items you rarely use. Leave everyday essentials for last, and create a simple packing schedule for each room.
2. Pack an essentials bag
Prepare a separate bag with everything you'll need for your first 24 to 48 hours: toiletries, medications, chargers, important documents, a change of clothes, basic cleaning supplies, snacks and water. Include items for children or pets, and keep this bag with you instead of on the truck.
3. Have your packing supplies ready
Gather sturdy boxes, tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, markers and labels before you start. Use smaller boxes for heavy items such as books and kitchenware, larger boxes for light items like pillows, and avoid overpacking.
4. Protect fragile items with materials you already own
Towels, blankets, sheets and clothing make excellent cushioning for dishes, glassware and picture frames. Wrap fragile items individually and fill empty spaces so nothing shifts.
5. Label every box clearly
Instead of just "Kitchen," write "Kitchen – Pots and Pans." Colored markers or tape for each room help movers place boxes and help you find things without opening every box.
6. Pack clothing the easy way
Use wardrobe boxes or garment bags for hanging clothes, and suitcases, duffel bags or bins for folded clothing. Clean clothing can also cushion other belongings.
7. Use suitcases and storage containers
Rolling suitcases are great for heavy books; backpacks and totes work well for shoes and electronics; plastic bins are ideal for items that will stay packed after the move.
8. Get help and divide the work
Ask friends or family to help and assign specific tasks. For larger moves or heavy furniture, consider professional movers.
9. Prepare for moving-day surprises
Weather, traffic, elevator restrictions or truck delays can disrupt your schedule. Give yourself extra time. If you're moving into a rental, coordinate your move-in date, key pickup, parking and any building requirements with your property manager in advance.
A few extra tips before moving into your new rental
Schedule utility activation, update your mailing address, and review your lease for move-in requirements. Once you receive the keys, document the property's condition with photos and report any existing concerns. Learn the maintenance procedures, trash schedule and parking rules.
